The Complete Guide to Jumpstarting Your Vehicle: How to Do It Safely & When to Call for Help
A jumpstart service is a roadside assistance procedure that helps revive a vehicle with a dead battery by connecting it to a working battery from another vehicle or a battery pack. This service is essential for getting you back on the road quickly when your car won't start due to battery issues. Knowing how to jumpstart your vehicle can be incredibly useful, but it’s important to do it safely and correctly. Below, we’ll walk you through the process step-by-step.
If you’re ever unsure or unable to perform the jumpstart, call RST Breakdown Recovery for help. Our team is available 24/7 to assist with professional roadside services

Step-by-Step Guide: How to Jumpstart Your Vehicle
1. Ensure Safety First
-
Position the Vehicles: Park both vehicles close together, in neutral or park, with the engines off.
-
Turn Off Electronics: Switch off lights, radios, and air conditioning in both vehicles.
-
Safety Check: Use gloves and avoid touching metal parts during the process.
2. Connect the Jumper Cables
-
Red to Dead Battery: Connect the red (positive) cable to the positive terminal of the dead battery.
-
Red to Live Battery: Attach the other end of the red cable to the positive terminal of the live battery.
-
Black to Live Battery: Connect the black (negative) cable to the negative terminal of the live battery.
-
Black to Ground: Attach the black cable to an unpainted metal surface on the car with the dead battery.
3. Start the Working Vehicle
Start the vehicle with the live battery and let it run for a few minutes to charge the dead battery.
4. Start the Dead Vehicle
Try to start the car with the dead battery. If it starts, let both cars run for five minutes. If it doesn’t start, call us for professional help.
5. Disconnect the Jumper Cables
Remove the cables in reverse order:
-
Black from the grounded surface
